What Is Essential Oil?

Natural essential oils are a concentrated compound extracted from a plant that capture it’s scent and flavour, or more commonly referred to as it’s essence. Methods such as cold pressing and steam/water distillation are used to extract these pure essential oils from the plant matter. This is basically condensing all of the beneficial properties of the plant into a concentrated liquid for you to enjoy.

Essential oils are typically diluted in a carrier oil or water, to lower the concentration if applied topically, as the oils themselves are often very potent and could be overwhelming on their own. It’s important to do a patch test before using the oils on a larger area of skin, to ensure you don’t get a bad reaction. The essential oils can also be toxic if taken orally, unless instructed and supervised by a healthcare professional.

Cosmetics manufacturers often use essential oil to create or enhance a range of products, such as perfumes, creams and body washes. Adding the oils gives the product an incredible fragrance and in some cases also works as an antioxidant. The type of plant used can also provide great health benefits for your body or mind. For example; chamomile has been found to treat inflammation and eczema, as well as supporting the immune system. Lavender oil is incredibly popular for having all kinds of benefits. When used in a diffuser, it’s subtly floral scent will help you to relax, and has been known to increase quality of sleep and alleviate headaches. For this reason, it’s no surprise that essential oils are a key ingredient in hair and skin care products.

Many aromatherapists use natural essential oil, and believe that breathing in essential oils can benefit you, as it allows particles from the oils to enter the lungs and bloodstream. There are many different methods to inhale essential oils, such as using a diffuser, spray, dry evaporation or adding a few drops to a bowl of steaming water, and placing your head over it. Each method may work differently for the user, and the type of pure essential oil used will offer different effects too. Oils can be mixed to create different combinations of benefits, so it’s worth experimenting to find the one that works best for you.
